James - Data
Introduce yourself
Hi, I’m part of the data team here at Car & Classic. When I’m not working with numbers, you’ll find me skateboarding, at the gym, or riding my motorbike through the countryside. I’m also a big film fan—Denis Villeneuve and Christopher Nolan are two of my favourites.
How would you describe your role to someone outside of your field?
I help the company use data to make smarter decisions. My job is all about finding insights, solving problems, and making sure our data is used in the right way to help the business grow.
How long have you been with Car & Classic, and what drew you to join the team?
I’ve been here for about two and a half years. I’ve always loved cars and bikes, so working for Car & Classic was a great fit. I also loved the idea of using modern tech in a business built around classic vehicles.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I love seeing how my work makes a difference for users. For example, helping improve the site’s search functionality has been really rewarding.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My days are a mix of solo work, team collaboration, and meetings:
- Morning: I usually start with focused data work, like improving our internal pipelines. Then we have a team stand-up to check in on progress.
- Midday: I meet with other teams to keep our data aligned with business goals.
- Afternoon: I switch between deep analysis, project work like building dashboards, and mentoring team members.
- End of day: I finish up with admin and plan ahead for the next day.
Who do you work closely with, and how does your team support each other?
I work with teams like product, marketing, and engineering to make sure data helps the business. Within my team, we share ideas and tools regularly and hold weekly reviews to keep everything on track. Everyone’s good at different things, so we make sure to support each other.
Since joining Car & Classic, what new skills have you developed or areas you’ve strengthened?
I’ve learned a lot here! I’ve improved my data engineering skills, grown as a leader by mentoring the team, and helped shape strategies that have a big impact on the business.
Is there something you’ve achieved here that you’re especially proud of?
Leading the taxonomy project has been a highlight. We completely restructured how vehicles are categorised, which made searching easier for users and boosted things like SEO. Seeing how much it’s helped the business has been really satisfying.
What’s been your favourite moment working at Car & Classic?
Leading a session on AI at our summer get-together was a great moment. Everyone got involved, and it was exciting to see the team so interested in how AI could help their work.
How would you describe the Car & Classic culture? How does this resonate with you?
The culture is open and supportive, with lots of freedom to explore your ideas. That really works for me because I love trying new approaches and figuring out the best way to solve tricky problems.
What car or bike on Car & Classic would you love to drive?
It has to be one of the Ferrari F40s we’ve got listed. It’s always been my go-to car in Outrun when I find an arcade machine.
How would you describe Car & Classic in just three words?
Classic car marketplace.
What surprised you the most about your team or the work environment when you first joined?
How passionate everyone is about making the platform great. It’s clear how much people care, and that’s really motivating.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone considering a role like yours?
Be ready to keep learning. The tools and techniques in data are always changing, so staying curious will help you make a bigger impact.
