Jack - Auction Operations
Introduce yourself
Hello! I'm Jack, a Listing Writer at Car & Classic. I was told my first word as a baby was "car", and I've been obsessed ever since!
When I'm not at work, I can be found in the shed messing about with classic cars, motorcycles, boats, tractors and just about anything else with an internal combustion engine...
How would you describe your role to someone outside of your field?
As a Listing Writer, I use my automotive knowledge to tell prospective bidders why they should spend their hard-earned cash on the lovely array of classic and collector vehicles we have coming to auction. I liaise with sellers to learn about their vehicles and conduct extensive research to compile detailed, informative, and entertaining words to accompany the glossy photographs on our auction listings.
I also contribute to Car & Classic's magazine, often documenting my own automotive adventures, projects and musings.
How long have you been with Car & Classic, and what drew you to join the team?
I studied History at university, honing my writing skills and have long harboured an ambition to write about cars. I joined Car & Classic in July 2022, having been familiar with the company and used its services for several years previously. I was one of the founding members of the original internal Listing Writing team and was excited to join a community that was passionate about securing the future of historic motoring.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I get to be a car bore all day, every day. What's not to like?!
What does a typical day look like for you?
My team is responsible for its own pipeline and for ensuring listings are written in a timely fashion, adhering to deadlines and changing priorities as required. We have a morning call to discuss what needs to be done that day, allocating different jobs to each team member to suit our individual fields of expertise. We keep each other updated throughout the day to ensure we're meeting team targets, as well as helping one another with research, proofreading and problem-solving.
Who do you work closely with, and how does your team support each other?
I work closely with my two fellow writers, as well as our Curation Team, who schedule auctions, organise photographs and process jobs through our pipeline. I also work with them to manage communications to our Freelance network. I meet regularly with the Marketing team to identify noteworthy auction vehicles and contribute words to other areas of the site, including form designs and Ts&Cs. I also communicate regularly with the Head of Content in order to allocate articles for the magazine.
Since joining Car & Classic, what new skills have you developed or areas you’ve strengthened?
I've learnt a great deal in this role. Highlights include managing a pipeline and understanding the capabilities of AI technology as a creative tool.
Is there something you’ve achieved here that you’re especially proud of?
Having been here since the creation of my team, I'm proud of how we've evolved, the cost savings we've been able to contribute and the high quality of the written content we produce. On a personal note, I always get butterflies each time I see one of my articles published in the magazine!
What’s been your favourite moment working at Car & Classic?
I've enjoyed the opportunities to get together as a company. Whether that's the whole C&C community or just my team, it's been great to catch up on a few occasions and work collaboratively in the same room.
How would you describe the Car & Classic culture? How does this resonate with you?
Everyone at Car & Classic is exceedingly hard-working, motivated and focused on doing the best job possible for our customers.
What car or bike on Car & Classic would you love to drive?
I'd answer this question differently every day, but at this moment in time, an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce (Tipo 101) on a sinuous mountain road would put a big smile on my face.
How would you describe Car & Classic in just three words?
Dedicated, enthusiastic, innovative
What surprised you the most about your team or the work environment when you first joined?
How receptive the team were to listen to and facilitate my ideas, despite my relative inexperience in this industry at the time.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone considering a role like yours?
You have to be properly obsessed with classic vehicles and be prepared to learn a lot more as you go. I'm told that I talk about carburettors in my sleep—that tells you all you need to know!
