Finance Director - 100% Remote


Job description

About you

You are an experienced Finance Director having worked with start-ups or scale-ups through several stages of growth. You are looking to join a fast-growing Series A scaleup heading up the finance function as the company goes through additional rounds of financing, international expansion, M&A and more.

You have gone through Series A or later fundraising rounds while on the finance team. You have experience working with international revenue lines (ideally European) including sales tax management, financial reporting across multiple geographies, and corporate reporting.

About the role

You will be running a team consisting of an assistant accountant and a finance manager as well as working closely with an external finance support team. You will be reporting to the COO and providing insights and analysis directly to the CEO, COO, and board as needed.


  • Management of customer invoice & supplier billing

  • Cash control for on-time collection & payment

  • Debtor and creditor management and analysis

  • Payroll & expense oversight

  • Foreign exchange strategy management

Accounting and tax

  • Monthly management accounts and KPI reporting

  • Annual financial statements and audit

  • Preparation of regular investor communications

  • Tax returns management including VAT in the UK and internationally

Planning & analysis

  • Manage the company’s operating model, including budgeting, tracking performance to plan and P&L

  • Cash flow and runway forecasting

  • Working cross-departmentally to understand the requirements of other departments

  • Identify key levers to improve company growth and performance

  • Maintenance of a company strategy to become cash self-sustaining as needed

Risk & governance

  • Develop and manage finance policies and procedures internally to the finance team but also across the business

  • Incorporate best practices across all reporting processes and ensure tools are being fully leveraged to increase efficiencies and reliance on automated controls

  • Manage the finance risk register

  • Customer and supplier contract negotiations as needed


  • Provide ad hoc business and financial reporting and analysis as needed for strategic decision support

  • Act as a Business Partner and Trusted Advisor to the CEO, COO and other executive and business unit leaders

  • Fundraising and M&A support

Job requirements

The skills, attributes and experience you must have:

In addition to the toolkit that will allow you to perform the role as described above, the successful candidate will have the following experience and attributes:

  • Worked as a Head of Finance or Finance Director at a startup or scaleup company which has raised £10m or more in a Series A or later fundraise and gone through at least one round of financing

  • Track record of running a high-performance finance team using software and strong processes to improve output

  • Independent and self-sufficient in your department but are used to working collaboratively with other departments across the company

  • Familiarity with various finance and accounting tools (Dext, Xero, ApprovalMax, Spendesk, etc…) and are able to derive your own reporting from these tool

  • Capability to get into the detail as well as seeing the bigger organisational picture

  • Experience with international VAT management and multiple geographies reporting

Skills, attributes and experience it would be nice for you to have:

  • Experience with Marketplace financial reporting (Gross Margin analysis, CAC, CLV, GMV, take rates, …)

  • Experience with various tax benefits (EMI or other share-based remuneration schemes, R&D tax credits, corporate benefits, …)

  • Fundraising and M&A experience
